Bonnie Hopkins, board member of the Farmington Grower's Market, and San Juan County Cooperative Extension Agent, discusses the benefits of growers markets in San Juan County. There are currently growers markets in Farmington, Aztec, Bloomfield and Cedar Hill. Hopkins discussed the different in taste, fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables have compared to items bought in grocery stores thathave been transported hundreds of miles.
The state of New Mexico is working with Growers Markets to allow S.N.A.P. and other food stamp benefits to be used at the markets for friesh fruits and vegetables.
